(July 18) Gov. Tom Corbett signs law to create school safety grants

Among a collection of legislation that Gov. Tom Corbett signed into law on Thursday was a bill that creates a targeted grant program for schools and municipalities to hire police officers to enhance school safety.

The bill, sponsored by Senate President Pro Tempore Joe Scarnati, R-Jefferson County, was offered in response to the December school shooting massacre in Newtown, Conn.

The grant program gives priority to those schools or municipalities that use police or resource officers that have completed training related to interaction with children in a school setting.

The recently enacted 2013-14 state budget provides $8.5 million for the school safety grants.
