Empower Erie’s plan for a community college picked up a new endorsement Thursday – several of them, actually, representing thousands of unionized workers.
The Erie-Crawford Central Labor Council, Great Lakes Building Trades and AFSCME Local 13 were among those to endorse the plan during an event at the Lawrence Park union hall of Local 506 of the United Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers of America at GE Transportation.
Scott Slawson, president of Local 506, said he’s been working to help bring new employers to Erie that can provide jobs for 1,500 GE Transportation workers laid off over the past year.
Right now, he said, the supply of skilled workers is strong. But that won’t always be the case, he said, explaining that a community college is needed to train the next generation of workers at an affordable cost.
